The Bidii Sideboard is a low storage sideboard handcrafted in Kenya from board. It is built as one long, continuous run, with the ends curved rather than squared so the piece reads as a single soft volume in a room. The making is unhurried: every fluted face is set in rhythm, and the hardware is placed to sit in line across the whole front. The carcass is board, finished in a soft white that carries the vertical fluting across the drawer fronts and the door panels. One pair of doors is glazed, revealing a glass interior shelf and a lower compartment behind. The top is a pale veined stone-look surface, edged with a slim warm-metal band that follows the curve of both ends. Slender turned legs and openwork corner brackets in the same warm metal tone lift the body clear of the floor. This sideboard is sized for a living room wall, and the photograph shows it doing the most common job asked of it: carrying a large screen, a lamp and a vase, with books, a decanter and trays stored below. It works equally well in a dining room or a wide hallway, where the drawers take linen and small items and the glazed section keeps a few things on display. Kamara works with Kenyan furniture makers who build pieces like this one by hand, in workshops rather than on production lines. Buying here means the money follows the craft, and the small variations in a hand-built sideboard are part of what you are choosing.
